Why do we need strict compliance regulations for nurses?
Compliance regulations surrounding the practice of doctors and nurses in the UK is necessarily strict. This is first and foremost to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of services and to safeguard your patients, colleagues, as well as yourself.

What documentation will you need to work as a nurse in the UK
To work as a nurse, you will first need to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and abide by their code of conduct. Some nursing specialties will require you to provide further evidence of training or certifications to practice. Our compliance team will also ask for some or all the following documentation depending on the requirements of the role you are applying for:
- CV and clinical references
- Enhanced DBS check on the updated service
- Proof of indemnity insurance
- Passport or photo ID if British/Irish
- Proof of right to work in the UK
- Life Support Training
- Mandatory Training
- Immunisation record
- Primary Medical Qualification
- Proof of address
It is also important to note that compliance can involve other elements aside from pure documentation, like interviews, etc.

What’s different for international nurses and compliance?
For nurses coming from outside of the UK to work, the requirements will be slightly different. In addition to the above documentation as an international nurse, you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and have completed the relevant exams before you will be approved and gain your licence to practice in the UK.
You’ll need to complete a two-part exam, the Test of Competence (ToC) to gain professional registration. The first part of the test is computer based and can be taken in your country of origin. The second, practical exam is conducted in one of five UK test centres and is an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). There is also an English language exam. These tests can be taken in any order and the time taken to complete this process can is dependent on your circumstances.
You will also need to confirm any degrees obtained from foreign universities with the relevant diplomas and transcripts.
