NHS Doctor’s Pay – What you need to know

NHS Doctor’s Pay Scales in the UK
The NHS is the UK’s largest employer and one of the best health services in the world. With doctors coming from all over the globe, the pay is an undeniable attraction to working here in the UK.
FY1 and FY2
The starting point for doctors is known as:
- Foundation Year 1 (FY1) with a base salary of £28,243.
- Foundation Year 2 (FY2) with a base salary of £32,691.
Specialist Training
- As a doctor starting your specialist training, you can earn anything from £38,693, rising to £49,036.
- Speciality Registrars (Core Training) – CT1 and CT2 receive £38,693, and CT3 earn £49,036.
- Specialty Registrars (StR) (Run Through Training) / Specialty Registrar (StR) (Higher Training) / Specialist Registrar (SpR) – ST 1- ST 8 – £38,693 to £49,036.
- Your base salary can be topped up with extra earnings in the form of allowances for nights, weekends (10%), and overtime (hours worked over 40 per week).
Specialty doctors
Doctors who specialise in their chosen area can earn from £40,037 to £74,661 as basic pay.
As all grades, the usual basic contract allows for a 40-hour working week, but overtime, weekends, night shifts (37% increase), on-call, and weekend work earns additional money.
Consultants
These top tier fully trained doctors can earn from £79,860 to £107,668 in annual basic pay.
With extra roles in research, education, or management, can leverage enhanced earnings to reflect the additional responsibility should you take on these roles.
You can apply for Clinical Excellence Awards if you take on work above your usual amount, that way you will be rewarded for that extra work.
If you want to earn more, you can set up in private practice also.
GPs – General Practitioners
There are two options here for GPs:
- Independent Contractors- they run their own GP practice
- Salaried GPs, who are employed by independent contractors or primary care organisations, pay varies from £58,808 to £88,744.
